I am an Ontario native, and I completely oppose this bill! We should not be overriding environmental protections for shortsighted profits. Last year, the federal government released the 2030 Nature Strategy as an important step in addressing biodiversity loss and meeting Canada’s international commitments. The Government of Ontario has participated in recent federal-provincial-territorial meetings on nature and the Ontario Biodiversity Council developed a provincial Biodiversity Strategy. This strategy contains many of the same targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss as the national strategy and international framework. Yet, now our provincial government is completely disregarding these strategies, overlooking the long term benefit of conservation areas, and further dismantling the province’s relationship with Indigenous peoples, all for short-term profits.
