As someone deeply invested in both environmental sustainability and responsible governance, I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. While I recognize the importance of economic growth, this bill's proposed amendments to the Endangered Species Act, 2007, are deeply concerning.
By redefining key terms like "habitat" and allowing for the discretionary listing of species, the bill undermines critical protections for Ontario's biodiversity. These changes could lead to irreversible harm to vulnerable ecosystems, prioritizing short-term economic interests over long-term environmental health.
I urge the Legislative Assembly to reconsider the implications of this legislation and to seek a more balanced approach that safeguards our natural heritage while supporting sustainable economic development.
