My strong view is to continue with the Environmental Assessment . I prefer that the Dump never exists for so many reasons. It is less than 1 KM of the Town Line of Dresden; there are Homes of a 200 year old Town of Dresden with lots of historical information of people years ago. The Dump would be within 800 meters from the local high school and businesses. Of great concern is the ecological endangered species of Molly’s Creek and Sydenham River which flows into the community of Wallaceburg and the First Nations Native Community of Walpole Island. All of which and more, continues to be an importance to everyone in our Small Town Dresden. Once the damage is done, it is likely never to return. Be known as a Ghost Town in Ontario.
As mentioned in prior submissions my views have not changed. Concerns such as :
Excellent area for Agriculture to Produce Quality Food. The dump would only pollute the air and lessen the quality and value of the crops being produced.
Health in the area would decline by having more respiratory problems, cancer and causing more strain and costs on the local health care system.
Increased and constant Noise would be detrimental to the area if they plan to expand the operation.
Too close to the Town of Dresden !
Truck traffic would be horrendous if you plan to send 700 trucks into the site. The same 700 trucks will have to leave the site as well. Our roads and bridges would just crumble over a short time with that many trucks. Who is really going to pay for repairs. Concern for other small towns having the same reasons of traffic running through their villages and towns.
- Safety issues for many children walking or riding buses to local schools would be a concern.
- Planting and Harvesting Seasons in the Agricultural area would add pressure for Safety on the roads for the local people in the areas well.
De-valuations – Who wants to live near a dump ! Who is going to pay for everyone’s depreciation in Value whether it is for a business or personal home or property.
Loss of Business – who wants to come to a town to shop with the above concerns. Not only to shop but for Special Town Events such as horse racing, Street Markets, Restaurants, Sports events etc.
Dresden is known to have Flood Plains surrounding the river and creeks that flow in and around the town. If there are toxins, garbage seepage of pooling chemicals in the dump and dangerous gases evaporating in the air, results over the years would be devastating and detrimental. Flood waters would carry them into the river destroying many Endangered Species known to this area. If the flooding didn’t destroy them, pollution in the air would get them as well as the people.
Geology of the land formation should not be taken lightly. Question – Is it suitable for that much weight? Will water wells be damaged? What are the chances of an explosion ?
It is sad to think when a decision was already made to have a full environmental assessment that someone in the Government decides rather quickly, the idea of NOT allowing a Full Environment Assessment. They intend on sliding a weaker version of an Assessment to mainly take the public’s voice out of future Environmental Issues. What has happened to Democracy ?
For sure Environmental Assessment should continue for this area ! There are a lot of reasons why the named location for a Dump should not exist that close to Dresden!
