I am writing to express my deep outrage and profound disappointment regarding the so-called “Protecting Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act.” This legislation is a blatant assault on environmental protections, community voices, and the democratic values Ontarians hold dear. Cloaked in the language of economic recovery, this Act prioritizes short-term profits for a few at the expense of our long-term health, sustainability, and public interest.
By weakening or bypassing critical environmental assessments, gutting land-use planning safeguards, and centralizing power in the hands of the Minister, this Act strips municipalities and citizens of the ability to shape the future of their own communities. It undermines decades of work done to protect farmland, wetlands, and green spaces—vital assets that are not only environmentally essential but foundational to a healthy economy.
True economic prosperity cannot come at the cost of our environment, our health, and our democratic rights. Ontarians want good jobs, but not ones built on the ruins of public trust and ecological degradation. There is no prosperity in pollution, no protection in unchecked development, and no justice in silencing communities.
I urge you to repeal this Act immediately. Instead, work with communities, Indigenous leaders, environmental experts, and local governments to create a recovery plan that is truly just, sustainable, and forward-thinking. Ontario deserves leadership that respects people, the planet, and our collective future.
