Bill 5 isn’t just patently un-Canadian, it’s anti human. It only stands to benefit those at the very top of the economic food chain at the cost of removing safety protections and economic security for everybody else in our society. This is a proposal to permanently destroy the natural beauty and renewable resources that make our country worth living in, all in exchange to give a short term economic boost to those who already run our economy.
It’s the tragedy of the commons, selfish people deciding “I need to cut down this forest we all share before someone else can beat me to it and get an advantage on me!” And why not? That forest is profitable! In fact, why don’t we just cut down every tree and strip mine the earth beneath? Failing to do that is just leaving profit on the table! While we’re at it, why don’t we just extend one of these “special economic zones” to cover the entire country too? Then someone with all the luxuries they could ever need can decide what the labour of us peasants is worth! After all, the only people worth paying are CEOs and board members in power ties. The rest of us just need to learn that we don’t deserve to live in a world that is enjoyable or beautiful.
