I want to register the strongest possible objections to the proposed Bill 5. It is an unjustified power grab threatening our environment, our energy independence and the right to live in an Ontario where our government truly represents the will of its citizens.
The premise that one has to allow the destruction of threatened and endangered species to "unleash" the economy is false. If existing legislation creates too many hold ups there have to be more nuanced reforms that do not completely overturn protections that have been in place for almost 20 years. To suggest that the habitat immediately adjacent to an animal's den is all that needs to be protected for them to survive is ludicrous and ignores basic understandings of biology.
The proposal to allow this government to ban energy projects or energy components from abroad has the potential to kill the spread of solar energy usage in Ontario. At a time when we live in a climate crisis this move to shut down a clean energy source is clearly wrong. It's hard to understand the motivation for this, unless the government wants to see us dependent upon large scale fossil fuel or nuclear generation. As an Ontario resident living off the grid I can't help but see this as a very regressive idea.
By ending archeological assessment as a requirement in some developments this government is openly shutting down indigenous involvement and their right to preserve cultural heritage. This would be an insensitive move destined to cause conflict with indigenous groups and their supporters for years to come.
Stop, take a deep breath and listen to Ontario citizens and groups depairing about the proposed Bill 5. It would be terrible legislation.
