Your bill 5 proposal sounds like it would actually make conservation worse in the name of housing. It doesn’t seem address that there are 230 plants and animals listed as endangered in Ontario and the number is growing. Reducing the protections for housing would only make it worse even if you are planning to push them out or relocate them when housing is being developed it would interfere with the food network they need. Additionally I saw there’s no mention of addressing how animals are mento to be dealt with during the displacement they would have a harder time accessing resources when if moved without government intervention to supply additional resources to the area. Also when the development starts in areas previously protected it can make the existing neighborhoods unsafe I have lived in the Durham area all my life and when they started to develop the green space near my home around 10 years ago there was a high number of wild light roaming around the area when previously I never saw any unless you where hiking in the trails in the green spaces you could leave your house at any time of the day and foxes would be on your yard making it unsafe for kids to be outside and play like they normally would or to take your pets out on walks. Well I understand that there is a need for housing I think the housing problem is moreso a pricing and investor issue then supply if investors are taxed higher for additional houses or there was some housing that was actually affordable to people the median income is 40k individually and 91k household you can’t even afford to rent a house in a suburb of Toronto. At 91k a couple could barely afford to buy a studio apartment at current rates not to mention that cost of living is extremely high presently and the quality of new builds are extremely low for how much red tape developers talk about when speaking on the housing cost they say almost half is government chargers. Everyone I know who owns a house built in the last 10years has had foundational issues or structural issues with their house even people with condos have massive issue just look at the well it’s barely opened has condos at over a million and flooded. Even condos in the outside of Toronto are having issues someone I know who’s got a condo in Pickering has had there unit have leaks multiple times to the point their insurance said they are not coving any additional damage and they have to sell.
The bill will not address the major issues with housing it only addresses supply but realistically it will just be scooped up by private equity groups and people will still it be able to have a house they can afford to live in. And it will just have negative effects on conservation I read some stuff relating to this bill mentioning taking treaty land which would just be disgustingly and disgraceful for the government to continually toy with indigenous communities. Well I didn’t notice it mentioned on the info provided I kept seeing it so I thought I would add in how gross you officials would be to do an act like that for housing in case it is an actual consideration.
