I strongly oppose the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act under Bill 5 and the introduction of the Species Conservation Act, 2025.
This is not just about “streamlining” processes—it’s about commodifying nature. Capitalism has gone too far when economic development is prioritized over the survival of species and ecosystems. The recent extreme climate events across the globe are clear warnings: our planet is in distress. The proposed shift to a registration-first model effectively weakens oversight and opens the door for irreversible damage to our already fragile environment.
Removing key protections such as the broad definition of habitat and the concept of “harassment” strips vulnerable species of their basic safeguards. The discretionary power to add or remove species from protection undermines scientific integrity and gives dangerous power to political and economic interests.
We must remember: humans are animals too. We are deeply interconnected with the natural world. Our survival depends on healthy, functioning ecosystems. Protecting endangered species isn’t just a moral obligation—it is a survival necessity for us all.
Instead of weakening protections, we should be deepening our commitment to conservation, restoring natural habitats, and aligning our policies with the wisdom of nature. Let this be a time of reconnection—not destruction.
Please reject this bill. Protect what’s left. For the planet. For future generations. For all living beings.
