I strongly oppose the proposal for the Species Conservation Act, 2025.
This proposal represents a threat to Ontario's land, wildlife, and democracy as it would give the Provincial Cabinet extreme new powers to ignore laws that protect our wildlife and our environment, and, by extension our public health. It would ignore Indigenous rights and reward favoured developers by eliminating public participation and the public right to be advised of significant environmental activities.
Repealing the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and introducing the proposed Species Conservation Act, 2025 removes real protections for at-risk species and their habitats. Science and recovery planning are being replaced by an empty process that does not and cannot protect our wildlife.
My fellow Ontarians and I deserve better. I urge you to withdraw this proposal immediately.
