I strongly oppose Ontario’s Bill 5. This legislation dismantles the Endangered Species Act, replacing it with a weakened framework that prioritizes development over ecological integrity. By narrowing the definition of “habitat” and removing protections against activities like harassment, Bill 5 leaves vulnerable species exposed to unchecked industrial expansion .
Furthermore, granting politicians the authority to determine species protections, sidelining scientific assessments, politicizes conservation efforts . The introduction of “special economic zones” exempts developers from environmental regulations, threatening biodiversity and undermining Indigenous rights .
Bill 5 represents a significant step backward in environmental stewardship. I urge the Ontario government to withdraw this bill and uphold robust protections for our province’s wildlife and natural habitats.
