Dear Premier Ford,
Bill 5 is wrong.
It claims to eliminate 'red tape' that slows development in the Ring of Fire. That is precisely what regulations are for. Measure twice, cut once.
Allowing the government to ignore existing environmental rules in a national emergency is precisely what Trump is doing.
It is possible to extract resources without overruling laws that protect people, water, land, air, and earth from industry wastes.
The first order of business should be to ensure that all resource extraction and development in the area is done safely and is in the best interest of Canadians, especially the First Nations communities who have been affected by past industrial actions. They must have a part in negotiations and their word should be final. Attawapiskat still has polluted water from past industrial exploitation.
Mining companies should follow existing environmental laws and the government should enforce them.
Bill 5 is wrong.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
