As a life-long resident of Ontario, I am strongly opposed to this legislation. The details outline go against Article 11 of UNDRIP, to which Canada is a signatory. Article 11 states:
Indigenous peoples have the right to practise and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs. This includes the right to maintain, protect and develop the past, present and future manifestations of their cultures, such as archaeological and historical sites, artefacts, designs, ceremonies, technologies and visual and performing arts and literature.
This legislation will minimize and remove the ability to access this right across the province. Preserving, or giving a chance for Indigenous peoples to provide direction on how to preserve their history and cultural sites is not red tape.
