There is an urgent need to ensure economic stability in our country. However, true stability depends on responsible development that does not saddle future generations with irreversible environmental costs. The proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act, including 1) redefining species habitat, 2) creating special economic zones to circumvent regulations, and 3) removing the responsibility for species recovery plans from the Ontario provincial government, represent short-sighted actions that will lead to long-term hardship.
These changes undermine the health of our environment and the well-being of future generations. The species we share this province with are essential to environmental stability, and we have a moral and ecological responsibility to protect them.
As a resident of Ontario, a scientist, and someone who directly works to recover endangered species in this province, I strongly oppose these proposed changes. They are irresponsible and will contribute directly to future extinctions and extirpations in Ontario.
