I strongly oppose Bill 5, the "Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act". What this government describes as "common sense" makes no sense. The creation of "special economic zones" where our laws do not apply in order to fast track development with no assessment of the consequences to wildlife, land, water or human health is reckless. As a person who cares about the long-term well-being of my community, of Ontario, and the planet, I want my government to protect endangered species, protect natural heritage sites, protect the environment and respect Indigenous rights-- Bill 5 erodes all the protections we currently have in place. I do not want you to redefine habitat and pave over and poison wetlands, peat lands, and farmland all while weakening our democratic processes to do it. You first need to consult scientists, consult First Nations, consult conservation authorities and other experts, consult the public and fulfill all your ecological assessment obligations-- do it right the first time because the consequences are multi-generational (ask Grassy Narrows). I urge you to immediately withdraw Bill 5.
