As an Ontario citizen, I am opposed to the establishment of “Special Economic Zones” where provincial laws, regulations, instruments, municipal by-laws, and municipal instruments can be suspended to enable “trusted proponents” to develop projects. This raises serious concerns about the rule of law.
This will remove public accountability by seeking to shield government decisions from civil liability. While I believe we need to find ways to become more economically independent of the United States, we should find other ways of achieving this, other than this knee jerk reaction that is Bill 5.
