Urgent Opposition to Bill 5 and Removal of Environmental Assessment for Dresden Landfill

I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, the "Protecting Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act," and the government's decision to remove the previously mandated full environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed York1 landfill at 28931 Irish School Road, Dresden.

Personal Impact

This proposed landfill stands to profoundly affect my family's daily life and well-being. Since July 1997, my parents have resided on the property adjacent to the proposed site. I visit them daily with my two young children, and we cherish our time together—enjoying activities like bike rides, campfires, and stargazing. Our gatherings are central to our family life, encompassing birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions.

The proposed landfill threatens to disrupt these cherished moments. The construction of an 80-foot berm directly outside their backyard would obstruct our view and diminish the enjoyment of our outdoor spaces. The anticipated odors and noise from the landfill would render outdoor activities, such as summer campfires and Easter egg hunts, unbearable. Safety concerns are paramount, especially with large trucks operating 24/7 near properties where children play and families gather.

Environmental and Health Concerns

My parents' water well is located less than 30 feet from the proposed landfill's property line. Preliminary plans indicate that leachate ponds may be situated adjacent to this well. Without a comprehensive EA, there is no assurance that contaminants will not seep into our drinking water. The absence of such an assessment leaves residents vulnerable to potential health risks without accountability or recourse.

The proposed landfill's proximity to Molly's Creek, a tributary of the Sydenham River—a well-documented biological hotspot home to at least 33 species-at-risk—raises significant environmental concerns. Toxic substances from the landfill could leach into these waterways, threatening critical habitats and pushing endangered species closer to extinction.

Community and Safety Implications

The proposed landfill is situated approximately 800 meters from residential areas, schools, churches, and businesses. This close proximity poses risks related to air quality, noise pollution, and traffic safety. The anticipated influx of up to 700 trucks daily would exacerbate congestion and increase the likelihood of accidents, endangering residents and visitors alike.

Call to Action

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent and Lambton County have both pledged to oppose the removal of the EA requirement, recognizing the importance of safeguarding public health and the environment . I urge you to stand with these communities and continue with the previously deemed requirement of a full environmental assessment. This is not merely a local issue; it is a matter of public health, environmental protection, and intergenerational responsibility.

Thank you for considering my concerns. I look forward to your support in ensuring that the health and safety of our community remain a priority.
