Proposed Bill 5 is an extension of the last several years of slowly undermining the provincial ESA and now using the threat of tariffs, the Ford government is taking advantage of peoples concerns over the economy by essentially gutting whatever is left of the ESA.
The government is essentially saying that they will develop what they want, when they want on Indigenous lands that is Ontario, and will select what company (or good friend of the Ford government) will carry out developments.
Bill 5 will destroy the long term environmental diversity under the guise of protecting our economy. The proposed Bill is not a balanced approach. Our environment and biodiversity in Ontario, Canada and the world is at an alarming rate of decline.
I urge the Ford government to be progressive and not reactive; to not sacrifice nature for short-term corporate profits. Walk away from proposed Bill 5 and instead work to achieve the 2021 Auditor’s general report recommendations to restore and strengthen the ESA. At the very least please provide an extension of the comment periods for all Bill 5 related proposals posted on the Environmental Registry to allow for meaningful public participation to occur.
Thank you.
