As a resident of Dresden, I’m begging for an environmental assessment be completed prior to the installation of the York1 Waste Disposal Site.

The “recycling” of this waste so close to our waterway and so close to our homes without an environmental assessment being completed is obscure. With the possibility of harmful airborne particles being produced, the long term effects to our health are unknown. The by products of these recycled products could pollute our waterways, such as Molly’s Creek or the Sydenham River. We already have endangered species that are home to the Sydenham River, we should be doing what we can to protect them. We should be taking the time to complete a proper Environmental assessment rather than a pushing through this project.

There are many other landfills that are already in service and are in no way close to reaching capacity, many of which are already in Chatham-Kent. And of these established landfills, there is a reasonable distance between the landfill and their respectable residential homes. Or consider moving this project somewhere more isolated such as up north, or somewhere that isn’t lush with rich farm land.

If this project proceeds, I worry about the safety of my children with all the additional truck traffic, along with the pollution from the trucks exhaust. Our roadways are already busy enough and are in rough shape. We don’t need to increase it with the weight and vibrations of 700 trucks per day dumping their garbage.

Dresden is our home, we are not a dumping grounds for Toronto’s waste! Do the right thing and complete and publish an environmental assessment! You’d want the same for your home!
