These changes do not support a viable future for our Province.
The protections for Species at Risk and their habitats established under the Endangered Species Act (2007) were introduced to prevent developers from destroying sensitive habitats and harming our Province’s most vulnerable species.
These proposed amendments do not offer sustainable solutions. I fear they will lead to a loss of biodiversity, damage to natural features that provide important ecological functions, and ultimately a permanent loss of some of our Province’s most vulnerable species.
I will continued to trust COSSARO (Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario) as a trusted, science based organization to contribute their considerable knowledge towards making decisions that impact protecting our various Canadian species. Changing this would be one of the greatest mistakes of our time and would lead to dangerous consequences for our collective future.
If wait times are such a costly issue then I suggest allocating funds towards the current process so that they are able to employ enough people required to complete the job in a timely manner. It would solve the issue in a cheaper and more effective manner than overhauling the current programs to this extreme extent.
