This terrible, anti-democratic proposed legislation will allow the government to suspend the requirement to comply with provincial and municipal laws for selected people and corporations. With the removal of legal requirements and oversight, this will become an accelerator for corruption and grift in the province!
Ontarians will not stand for this! Our laws, created by our democratically-elected governments must apply to everyone - without exceptions. Creating these “zones” is a reckless act that will continue to destroy good governance in the province, and will not help save our economy.
In addition, as noted by Environmental Defence: “The exemption from provincial laws and regulations could represent a breach of constitutionally defined and protected Indigenous rights including the Duty to Consult and the respecting the Honour of the Crown under section 35. It also represents an abandonment of public participation as legislated under the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.”
Bill 5 is a direct attack on healthy communities, good planning, clean water and air, species at risk and the rights of Indigenous people, and must be repealed.
