I am all for streamlining Environmental Assessment processes for improved efficiency but streamlining should not mean eliminating the Environmental Assessment process altogether.
The Environmental Assessment process is important to ensure environmental protection and that standards for protection are being met. It also establishes a baseline of current environmental indicators such as water quality and soil health so that changes to water quality and soil health can be monitored effectively using environmental compliance approvals.
A baseline needs to be established so that York1 can be held to account. And if the location does not meet the setbacks and requirements for a landfill to today’s standards of environmental protection then they should look for another site - plain and simple.
This site is too close to surface waters. It is too close to a municipal population. There are drinking water wells on adjacent properties that are highly likely to be contaminated. It is in an area of prime agricultural land which will likely be contaminated.
