I do not support Bill 5. My concern is that this bill would allow for the provincial government to exempt entire areas - and the companies operating in them - from environmental protections, health standards, and local planning rules. There is no criteria or democratic process for how zones are chosen or what laws can be ignored, and no legal requirement to notify the public, keep records, or let people sue if they are harmed. The proposed Bill will bypass the duty to consult Indigenous peoples and infringe on constitutionally protected rights as well as the Province's commitment to treaty rights and truth and reconciliation. Economic development should not take place at the expense of ecologically and culturally significant regions.
