I suggest you empower the counties to make up local hubs. . . Simcoe county is probably leading the way in this . . . use them as a pilot. . . the idea is that all stakeholders private and public should be treated equally . . . transit maps could be made showing how a person can go from one centre to another via both public and private offerings. . . improvements can be made to connections so that commuters from places like Collingwood could work in Barrie and take local transportation . .. or travel to hospitals. Where buses serving Georgian college Orillia and Barrie from Muskoka can be given transportation connections to local transit or even to connect to GO train service without encroaching on other “rights” etc. I have already broached this idea a number of years ago . . .
More rural counties like Huron County . . need better links to places like Kitchener/Waterloo/Stratford and London. At present there are no commuting alternatives except to own a personal vehicle . . .
In the tri-city region of Kitchener/Waterloo Cambridge and Guelph . .. there really does not exist any transportation corridor between Cambridge and Guelph . .. why? A case is made for a transportation link between Cambridge and Brantford . .. even VIA can be included as one examines the fact that regular trains service communities between Toronto and Kingston within commuting distance . . can VIA be included . .. what about transportation between Stratford and Kitchener Waterloo .. .. currently there exists nothing but VIA . .. . and that is limited. Nothing from Woodstock to Stratford . .. people commute here . . . These are just a few examples of where you can start. . .
Metrolinx can co-ordinate with the county agencies for trans border transportation needs . .. but where stakeholders like Greyhound and many others are all viewed as part of the process of moving people in Ontario . . . for instance including them as an alternative from Barrie to Toronto . . . integrating them into picture. . . using the new 407 station as an intercity hub. . . treating Greyhound as an equal partner in this process (obviously differing fares) . . . integrating Presto card services in certain regions . ..
Ottawa . .. expanding the role of OC transpo to take care of their entire region (and outside their boundaries) like a Mini Metrolinx etc . .. This discussion is a good first step. Possibly expanding GO Transit into the greater Ottawa region to do the intercity of this critical region rather than OC transpo . . . these are just a few suggestions
I advocated for the existence of Metrolinx in the early 1980s . .. the province took more than 20 years to implement this. How long will you wait with this? As I said start with Simcoe County Transportation . . or call it “Huronia Transit” . . . that is a good local name . . .
