As an academic specializing in environmental issues, I strongly oppose Bill 5 in Ontario, as it represents a troubling departure from evidence-based environmental governance. The proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act weaken the scientific rigor that is essential for effective conservation policy. My research—and that of many colleagues—demonstrates that biodiversity loss has profound ecological, social, and economic consequences. By privileging short-term development interests over long-term ecological integrity, Bill 5 disregards the overwhelming body of scientific knowledge about species protection and ecosystem health. This move not only threatens endangered species in Ontario, but also undermines public trust in the province's commitment to sustainability and climate resilience.
