Archaeology is not red tape. People’s history and heritage is not red tape. I am very concerned about the prospect of the government allowing themselves to exempt certain projects from archaeological assessment. Where is the thorough and meaningful consultation? Where is the regard for Indigenous rights? This sets a very dangerous precedent. How will you know if there exists a significant archaeological site within the project area if you don’t do any archaeological assessment? When done correctly and initiated at the early stages of a project archaeology does not slow down projects.
