The SEZ Act as proposed is unacceptable. Enabling the Premier and cabinet to suspend the laws of the land, found in the form of provincial regulations and municipal bylaws, at will and behind closed doors runs counter to my understanding of democracy. A provincial election was held less than three months ago. At no time did I hear my local Conservative candidate or the Premier express their willingness and intention to revoke their obligation to uphold provincial laws, and to do so on a discretionary and privileged basis. To make this matter worse, there is the possibility that genesis of the idea for this act and the drafting of it's content did not involve my Conservative MPP or few if any government MPP's. If this legislation allowing for suspension of laws of Ontario is largely the creation of appointed ( not elected ) government staffers and provincial employees, then do not proceed. The option is clear. Make every check and balance to government decision making much more streamlined and time efficient. I agree that making a yes or no decision on proposed development takes too long. Rework the means to implement the Protect Ontario concept. The SEZ proposal is unacceptable.
