The proposed changes to the Endangered Species act would take the existing criteria for species protection and replace it with a model that allows the government to use their discretion to pick and choose what species deserve protection. The proposed "register first, get approved later" model for permits completely ignores the possible harm that could be done to Ontario's environment in favour of short-term gains. The redefinition of what is defined as a habitat also completely ignores the amount of space species need to live healthily. The establishment of "special economic zones" would give companies granted exemptions free rein to cause harm to Ontario's environment with no consequences. I strongly oppose these changes, as in general they show a disregard for the needs of the environment in favour of short term progress.
