I am not any kind of environmental expert, but just an ordinary citizen. This is my first time submitting a comment on a government proposal. I have spent my entire life in Ontario and my absolute favourite part of our province is out abundant natural beauty and its commitment to preserving its beautiful flora and fauna.
I am horrified by this move by our government to violate our environment and the complete reversal on any progress we have made in conservation. I hope that my representatives understand that the passage of Bill 5 will, with certainty, result in the death of vulnerable animals and the destruction of their homes. The protections we have in place are there for a reason, and I cannot in good conscience support a government that will give free rein to corporations that will tear apart habitats and cause actual physical harm to wildlife.
Ontarians trust our government to protect nature for future generations to enjoy. I hope that our government will carefully consult environmental experts and Indigenous leaders, as well as the general public, in making their decisions - a government will be upheld by its electorate insofar that we have assurance they will act in our best interests. Bill 5 is a step back for our shared environment and public confidence in our leaders, who will find that voters will not be easily duped by thinly veiled assaults on our environment and fair process. The supposed economic benefits of its implementation are not worth the value our exceptional natural areas provide to Ontarians.
