The changes proposed in Bill 17, Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act, 2025, will not meet the moment in delivering more homes to Ontario. The bill utilizes the threat of Trump to scare Ontarians into eliminating regulations that keep our air clean and our cities economically functional. This bill heavily overreaches into municipal operations and limits local residents from having a say in how their communities grow. For the reasons listed below, I request that you reverse course on Bill 17 and instead grow Ontario’s economy in a sustainable way.
This bill allows the province to dismantle existing green development standards and would ban any future standards from being put into place. I resent the idea that future generations should be forced to grow up in a more polluted environment, with less safe and resilient homes.
I strongly believe that local communities and municipalities should have a say in the planning and development decisions of their cities - that’s how democracy works, after all. Bill 17 is a massive overreach of provincial politics.
The potential for overuse of Ministerial Zoning Orders concerns me; this reeks of government abuse and corruption. If you want to build something, do it the right - and legal - way.
I understand the need for more homes that are safe and affordable for current and future generations, but I don’t see anything in Bill 17 that would get us closer to that future. You must amend this legislation before it’s too late.
Sincerely,
C Nixon
