I believe the Ontario Conservative Government’s plans to change the Ontario’s Blue Box recycling program is regressive because it will:
- increase pollution
- make waste producers less accountable
- place more costs on municipalities and renters
- delay recycling targets (for materials like paper, plastic, metal, glass and beverage containers) by five years,
- allow corporate producers to burn non-recyclable plastic in incinerators or cement kilns, and still count this as recycling.
- mark a major reversal of more than a decade of progress in waste reduction and recycling in Ontario
- listen to lobbyists from corporations who claim recycling costs are too high.
- move Ontario toward deregulation of the waste industry
- risk the environmental health and the health of Ontarions by increasing climate emissions and pollution.
I urge the Ontario Conservative Government to:
- follow the example of other provinces which use a deposit-return recycling system
- move toward increasing producer responsibility
- establish zero waste targets,
- increase the accountability of producers to reduce these wastes to a two year target instead of a five year target
- follow its initial promised timelines to reach important waste targets
- create a win-win situation for itself and for Ontarions
