Hamilton has one of the largest populations of unhoused people in the entire country. Our city hall property was just occupied with numerous tents which were recently destroyed by Hamilton Police. Housing is a human right, and as a city and as citizens, we have a duty to ensure that everyone has a roof over their heads. We need to prioritize rent-geared-to-income (RGI) housing. And this land needs to ensure that ALL units developed are for homeless individuals. We have over 7000 people on the City of Hamilton Access to Housing waitlist. We NEED to prioritize subsidized housing. Every single unit that gets developed on this land should be subsidized. The word “affordable” housing means nothing. That does not guarantee social housing or subsidized housing at all. The proposal says 46-210 “affordable” units. Why are we not prioritizing homelessness in Hamilton? People are dying. And housing is a human right.
