My name is Ahmed Alsaad, and I have worked at the Biox Bio-Diesel facility for the past 1.5 years. Since last December, my colleagues and I have been laid off due to the economic fallout from the U.S.-Canada trade dispute and the lack of a domestic sourcing requirement for biodiesel components.
I fully support a policy change that mandates biodiesel used in Ontario be produced domestically. While the current regulation requires biodiesel to be blended into fuel, it does not ensure that the product is made in Canada—leaving local facilities and workers behind.
Implementing a domestic content requirement would not only allow facilities like ours to resume operations, but it would also attract investment, stimulate economic growth, and most importantly, create much-needed jobs in Ontario. I urge decision-makers to correct this oversight and prioritize Canadian-made biodiesel.
