I strongly urge to ensure that any Minister’s Zoning Order issued for the Jamesville site in the City of Hamilton prioritizes the development of real affordable, community-based housing. Jamesville represents a rare opportunity to create lasting, equitable change in a city grappling with a growing housing crisis. This site has historically supported low-income residents, and its redevelopment must reflect that legacy—not erase it. The displacement of vulnerable communities in favor of market-rate or luxury housing would be a profound failure of public responsibility. The site should be developed in partnership with non-profit and co-operative housing providers to ensure long-term affordability, accessibility, and social inclusion. Hamilton does not need more unaffordable housing—it needs bold, decisive investment in housing that serves its most marginalized residents. Jamesville can and should be a model of what responsible, inclusive development looks like.
