Please do NOT complete this transfer. As a long time resident of Wasaga Beach and a Business Owner that relies on tourism, I do not support this.
The municipality has already said how exciting it is to open 60 acres of development land at the main beach area. This CANNOT be allowed.
There is already evidence of the Municipality erecting “private property” signs to prevent access to public beaches in areas where they want to protect private property owners.
Having the Nancy Island separated from the park is a good idea as long as appropriate funding (beyond the initial infrastructure money) is provided. The Ministry of Tourism is doing a great job in Midland and will do a great job in Wasaga.
There is NO reason that the Provincial government can’t simply invest in improvements to the existing park and maintain it for all residents of Ontario and beyond to enjoy. The PROVINCE needs to maintain control for so many reasons.
Financially, the residents of Wasaga Beach cannot afford to maintain the park in its current size, so the public spaces would have to be sold off to developers.
This practice has already started with residential townhouse condominiums being built at the Main Beach on Municipal Property, using a buy now, build and pay later scheme with a local builder. It’s just plain WRONG!
The Piping Plovers will not enjoy the same protections in future if the Town takes over responsibility for that area. In fact, in previous years, administration at the Municipality looked into ways to remove the nesting area.
The municipality is already stating that large parking structures would have to be built if the existing parking areas are covered with condominiums. The residents of Wasaga Beach CANNOT afford this and such structures will completely change the experience of going to the beach.
Much more regulatory information and financial ramifications need to be shared with the public before proceeding.
In closing, PLEASE delay this transaction to allow for proper public consultation with diverse methods of gathering opinions. This cannot be rushed and should not proceed.
