This is another example of how this government wants to erode environmental protections. If Beach Area 1 is put into municipal hands, how long will it be before the beach is cleared and raked all the way to the tip- removing habitat for piping plovers and other species at risk? With Bill 5 getting rid of the Endangered Species Act and replacing it with the Species at Risk Act, there is no reason for the town to protect habitat any more.
This also sets a terrible precedent for the deregulation of provincial parks, especially at a time when more land needs to be set aside and protected, not less.
If this goes through, there must be strict requirements for the town to protect species and habitat. Wasaga Beach is not just for people.
