I don’t support these amendments. I live in the other part of Ontario which has critical nesting habitat for Piping Plovers (in NW Ontario) and personally have a stake in this question as an Ontarian, biologist, farmer and parent. I can’t afford waterfront property even here so I have little sympathy with anykne who would want to develop it down in s Ontario. Who would benefit? Certainly no one I know. As a small farmer I understand that some land use is necessary for our economy. But there should be limits to development and certain rare habitats should define those limits. I can and do (because there are some areas here protected from development) enjoy access to some natural waterfront. I think Ontario’s moral duty is to protect habitat of endangered Ontario species AND to protect access to natural areas for all citizens. Money, tourism, development- all are nice but secondary. The specific nesting habitat requitrments of the Piping Plover are rare in Ontario and we humans don’t need them. We can use other beaches. I volunteer to monitor our nesting Piping Plovers. Here there are ONLY TWO- a male and female who sometimes manage to hatch out 3-4 eggs and sometimes manage to evade predation of some of their hatchlings. There are this year two others- one is their offspring. The other might be from the Wasaga area. It may interest you to know that your government hasn’t reduced barriers to protecting species while you’ve been busy reducing barriers to development. This year the Piping Plover nest on Lake of the Woods are exposed to predation because they chose the Canadian side of the bay and the government biologist said ‘they can’t interfere’. If theyd nested 20 km away on the Minnesota side a simple enclosure could have been erected around the nest because Minnesota policy isnt so silly. We do interfere- we interfere every day- by adjusting water levels, letting people disturb and develop habitat, letting cats and dogs roam free, tampering with species protection legislation, etc etc. It is ridiculous to me that your government can’t muster the imagination to create an economy that doesn’t further degrade the environment. Stop being so backward please. Get better ideas.
