Wasaga Beach Provincial Park has been chronically underfunded over the years. This has given the Town of Wasaga Beach ammunition to persuade the Government to hand over these proposed sections of beach and adjacent parking lots in what has all the appearance of a land grab of prime real estate. It would be a travesty if these lands with their dunes, vegetation, trees and picnic areas fall victim to development of high priced Beach front homes and hotels. These ecologically rich areas must be preserved and the best solution is for them to remain with Ontario Parks, with the appropriate funding to maintain and preserve them. Wasaga Beach Provincial Park has a proven track record of living up to their mandate of environmental protection.
In addition, should this proposal go through it sets a dangerous precedent for other municipalities, or indeed private companies to also take over Provincial land.
I completely oppose the proposed transfer. I urge the Province to put an end to this plan and to instead provide the appropriate funding to Wasaga Beach Provincial Park to manage these sections of beach and lands in the best interests of the ecology while also balancing this with the enjoyment of tourists.
