Although the amendments are intended to benefit the municipality of Wasaga Beach with housing, roads and tourism, with removal of the land from the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, the result is likely to be an incalculable loss in value of special natural assets. There will be threat to the mature sand dunes that provide an important buffer and a significant wetland that also has natural infrastructure benefits. Development outside of the Park's protections will also threaten the endangered Piping Plover which I understand attracts international birders. Sadly, these changes to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act sacrifices unique, authentic Ontario experiences rather than Protecting Ontario. More Ontario treasures will be on sale. Wasaga Beach may gain something but lose its real significance - and so will all of us in Ontario.
