I am concerned that the planned land ownership transfer from Ontario Parks to the Town Of Wasaga Beach will jeopardize the habitat of the Piping Plover, an Endangered Species, that falls within the boundaries of the land in question.
I respectfully request that the planned land transfer be cancelled or the terms significantly amended.
Under the management of Ontario Parks, the unique habitat of the Piping Plover was protected through restricted mechanical raking, preservation of natural dunes, and protection of nests from both humans and natural predators. Tourism also benefited as many visitors attended the area to observe the Piping Plovers as they nested and raised their young. Conservation and Tourism can go hand-in-hand, and Ontario Parks is best positioned to continue this stewardship/tourism effort.
If the land ownership transfer proceeds, I feel that it is incumbent on the Province to include legal provisions to ensure that the Piping Plovers are conserved and protected by a science-based management plan, and commit provincial resources to support that plan. The Town of Wasaga Beach must be required to work with experts in conservation to continue efforts to support this precious species.
Thank you for your consideration.
