The proposal to remove a large portion of the beach area from the provincial park is very disturbing. The natural dune features of the beach provide habitat for species that rely on this limited type of ecosystem and provide natural resistance to erosion. It is particularly concerning that one of the few places that provide habitat for the endangered piping plover will be compromised.
Of great concern also is the province’s move to amend the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act to allow significant portions of Provincial Parks to be severed off for development. Ontario needs to do its share of Canada’s commitment protect 30 percent of its lands and waters by 2030. The proposed amendment sets a bad precedent and goes in the opposite direction to achieving this goal.
