I'm from Northeastern Illinois, and I volunteer here to protect a Blanding's turtle site, which also happens to be a Piping plover site. Reading that protections at Wasaga Beach will be reduced to increase tourism and human activity at a Piping plover site gives me the chills. Sadly, it sounds so "American" or Trumpian. At the beach where I volunteer, where the Piping plovers nest and where the Blanding's roam/nest, volunteers are constantly needed to chase out tourists' unleashed dogs, atvs and motorbikes, bicycles and just clueless human feet. It's very stressful. We can't be there all the time and I highly suspect that overnight atvs were a driving factor (literally) in the recent loss of some of 2025's Piping plover chicks. Please please please, Ontario, don't become "American" in your view of endangered species. I use Ontario's research and resources as examples for our future protections and endeavors, as a goal of how much better we could protect our endangered species here in the USA. The future of American environmental concerns looks bleak under our current administration, so this actually puts more pressure on Canada to pick up the slack. Please, Wasaga Beach, continue to be an excellent example of environmental protectionism.
