I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Ontario government’s reckless plan to sell parts of Wasaga Beach to private developers. This beach is not just any piece of land — it is a cherished public space that belongs to the people of Ontario, and it must be protected, not sold off for short-term profit.

I have spent countless days at Wasaga Beach — walking the shoreline, swimming with my family, and reconnecting with nature. It is one of the few places left in Ontario where everyday people can access a natural waterfront with only the price of an annual parks pass or daily parking pass. Selling this land will limit public access, disrupt fragile ecosystems, and forever change the character of a place that holds deep meaning for so many of us Ontarians.

Wasaga Beach is also critical habitat for the endangered piping plover, a small shorebird that has been nesting here in recent years thanks to ongoing conservation efforts. This is one of the only places in Ontario where these birds are trying to recover. The critical natural beach habitat at Wasaga has produced half of the province’s Piping Plover fledglings since 2007. Development in this area would threaten their survival — undoing years of dedicated work by scientists, volunteers, and local communities to protect their nesting grounds.

Once public land is sold, it’s gone forever. We’ve already seen how destructive this kind of thinking is when it comes to Ontario’s Greenbelt and other natural spaces. We must learn from those mistakes — not repeat them.

I urge you in the strongest terms: cancel this misguided plan. Keep Wasaga Beach public. Protect the piping plovers. And show that Ontario values its natural heritage over the interests of a few private developers.
