While it is commendable that Aecon is “rehabilitating” the land I am concerned as to the quality and condition of the fill to be used in the process. Eleven million cubic metres of soil is a huge quantity especially when one considers that it is going into a recharge area for an aquifer and the potential for contaminating local wells and the Credit River and ultimately Lake Ontario as everything ends up there. Will the soil be checked by ministry inspectors or will it be a matter of self regulation? Who will be responsible if contamination does occur? Who will pay for water testing of the local wells and the downstream effect on the Credit River? We have a government that is cutting corners left right and centre and is loathe to enforce regulations so I am deeply troubled by the potential for harm here.
