I am a long time resident of Wasaga Beach and I oppose the town and the provincial government’s proposal to sell 60 hectares of land. Transferring ownership of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park lands is not required to support beach-related tourism re-development plans in the Town of Wasaga Beach. On the contrary, it is thanks to the active protection of the Recovery Program at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park that piping plovers and their habitat can coexist with a thriving beach destination.
The town council claims it continues to protect globally unique landforms like its 2000 year old sand dunes yet erosion is allowed to go unchecked. Recreation Vehicles continue to drive on them unchecked. New home developers like the ones at the top of Knox Road East and along Sunnidale are encroaching continually on dune lands.
The Wasaga council offers no solid guarantees in the future for beach lands to continue to be accessed by the public. Also the types of expensive condos and hotel currently being built is not affordable to the average wage earner.

The town’s desire to double the tourism to the beach by 2030 lacks more ecological research to ensure the world’s largest fresh water beach does not end up like surrounding beaches with high bacterial counts and daily warnings.
Lastly, this land sale proposal sets an ugly precedent in the future for more developer deals in the future. Please stop the sale of these precious lands!
