I believe that the removal of environmental protections or development of Wasaga Beach sets a horrific precedent for the future of environmental protections and conservation efforts in this province. Wasaga Beach is a beloved tourist destination because of its wildlife and environmental diversity, not in spite of it. Any Canadian can head to their local river to get a breath of fresh air, but the endangered plovers and the Plover Palooza event held in Wasaga every year provide a environmental, commercial, and community spirit boost to the surrounding area.
The plovers need to be protected, and they are the primary reasons my friends and I rent cottages and bring our families every summer. The wildlife there is beautiful and should be cherished, just like all the protected lands in Ontario. Any empty field in Ontario could be another apartment or housing strip. But this beach is one of a kind and needs to be protected.
