I am very concerned that the proposal to transfer Wasaga Beach from Ontario Parks to the Town of Wasaga Beach is disregarding the important role for the Province of Ontario to conserve and protect the piping plover and its habitat and nestimg sites there, as a species at risk. The regulatory impact analysis does not even mention possible impacts on piping plover habitat. We should protect both tourism and nature, continuing to use a science-based approach and continuing to provide provincial funds to conserve this species, their nests and its best breeding habitat in Ontario. Ontario Parks is the best placed government agency to continue this protection. But if the Town of Wasaga Beach is transferred this land, it must continue to protect the beach habitat of this important species, and this must be a condition of the transfer. This is too important to be left out of the agreement. Scientific experts at Birds Canada are well placed to help and should continue to be involved.
