With the proposed changes in mind, I think it is unrealistic that the Town of Wasaga Beach will have enough expertise and resources to protect the Piping Plover, if they do even consider protecting the species. In order to protect the species, I think the township will need help from the Government of Ontario to provide science-based management to protect the habitat that the Piping Plover uses to nest and forage. The Government of Ontario would need to assist with funding that goes towards protecting the species, restricting raking of their habitat, implement protection of their nests from predation with fenced buffer zones, and involve bird conservation organizations, like Birds Canada, to help implement these protections.

The endangered Piping Plover did not breed in the Great Lakes for 30 years until 2007. Since then, the species has been able to produce offspring in Wasaga Beach thanks to conservation efforts. It would be a shame to reverse all this effort that has been put into place over the last 18 years. It would also be a poor economical decision considering the amount of money that was been put towards protecting the species. Above all else, humans are stewards of the land an should do their utmost to ensure that human activity is not affecting the other organisms that share the land with us.
