The proposed land transfer…

The proposed land transfer threatens the best piping plover habitat that Ontario has. This area of Wasaga Beach has been the site where almost 60 pairs of plovers have raised almost 90 babies - given how rare these endangered shorebirds are, the sheer number of them that nest and breed at Wasaga Beach shows how important the beach and sand dune environment is for them. These birds are federally and provincially protected as an endangered species, and it is a tragedy that their nesting grounds are at risk of being put up for sale and development.

We, as people who live and work on this land, owe the plants and animals protection, safety, and a right to life. This species of bird had been entirely eradicated from Ontario in the 1980s due to human actions, and we are threatening them with the same fate. This is an issue bigger than the potential windfall of the sale of land for a development. Destroying this piece of habitat may mean we never see them again in Ontario. It may mean we rob a generation of Ontarians and travelers the opportunity to marvel at the beauty of our precious natural environment. I urge anyone with decision making capacity to prevent this from happening. Keep Wasaga Beach in the hands of the people of Ontario, and keep it safe for these stunning endangered birds. We owe it to them.
