I strongly am against this act as removing or not adding bike lanes in Toronto will continuing to prioritize cars over people and is holding the city back. For decades, Toronto has poured money and space into roads and parking, yet traffic keeps getting worse, commute times keep growing, and air quality keeps declining. Doubling down on car dominance is not progress or the solution - it’s stagnation and makes us fall behind. This is rooted in fact, not emotion and has been proved worldwide. Every city that has built itself around cars has ended up with the same problems: congestion, pollution, unsafe streets, and a poor quality of life for residents. CARS MAIM, PARALYZE, AND KILL MANY ADULTS AND CHILDREN EVERY YEAR - WHY ARE WE NOT PREVENTING THIS?
Bike lanes aren’t just about cyclists, they’re about designing a city that works for everyone. When we give more room to cars, we make it harder for people to move efficiently, safely, and sustainably. When we build bike lanes, in conjunction with public transport (TTC is not that bad in my opinion, but can be improved) we create safer streets, cleaner air, and healthier communities. It’s short-sighted to think the answer to gridlock is more lanes for cars. That approach has failed everywhere it’s been tried.
If Toronto continues to resist these changes out of fear of upsetting drivers, it will fall behind other major cities that have already embraced modern, people-centered design. Cities like Montreal, London (UK), Paris, and Copenhagen are thriving with similarly sized transit systems because they’ve made cycling and walking practical daily options. Toronto deserves better than to keep clinging to outdated priorities that serve a few at the expense of everyone else. Building more bike lanes isn’t radical, it’s responsible, forward-thinking, and necessary for a city that wants to move ahead instead of staying stuck in traffic. “BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME” is a standard principle of urban planning, so qualified urban planners should be making these decisions - they know what’s right.
