We are approaching environmental catastrophe. The greenbelt was a massive step forward in protecting our environment, preserving farmland and encouraging urban intensification. Urban intensification is less energy intensive and actually improves people's lives by bringing jobs, commercial space and living areas closer together. Intensification has been shown to increase economic productivity and human creativity, which increases employment.
This legislation weakens the protections of the environment and puts our future at the mercy of city councils, who may be pressured by local developers into acting against the interests of citizens (as has happened in the past). It threatens the remaining farmland in Southern Ontario.
I strongly support the previous government's greenbelt and other environmental legislation.
Please act in "the people's" interests, not large developers' interests, and abandon this legislation.
